Abstract

Temporarily e-newspaper is little studied and in general unexplored resource in digital libraries, and there are almost no good practical examples of e-newspaper research in Latvia either. Therefore the author of the paper has chosen a topic about e-newspapers as information mediators. Dealing with a problem situation paper firstly offers review of theories which is connected to e-newspapers as information mediator (pragmatism, actor network theory, genre theory), likewise it analyses authors’ conceptual statements about digital information culture, digital libraries, e-newspapers. Secondly, the research offers analysis of Latvian e-newspapers as well as methodology for further investigation of e-newspapers. At the beginning of paper the hypothesis was carried out: if e-newspapers use new media offered possibilities and corresponds to genre demands, they are qualitative information mediators. As the result of the work hypothesis is affirmed. E-newspapers can be called qualitative information mediators if they correspond to their genre demands. The most important measurement which differentiate e-newspaper genre from printed newspaper genre is functionality. Empiric research shows that functional elements in Latvian e-newspapers exist, but are used only partly. Nevertheless there are e-newspapers in Latvia which are qualitative information mediators. Keywords: Electronic newspaper, pragmatism, actor network theory, genre theory, digital information culture, digital libraries.
