Abstract
The Master's thesis was developed at the Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art of the University of Latvia. The thesis examines the external evaluation system of general education institutions. Latvian experience is compared with the experience of other countries, and proposals are made for the improvement of the existing accreditation system. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the existing accreditation system of general education schools in Latvia, to obtain data and evidence on how the accreditation process affects educational institutions, and, based on interviews with foreign and Latvian education management experts and surveys of educational institution leaders, to propose specific improvements. Within the framework of the Master's thesis, the procedure for external evaluation of general education institutions in Latvia and abroad has been analysed. Educational institution leaders and their deputies were surveyed about the accreditation system, and education experts from various countries were interviewed. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations were summarized on possible improvements to the external evaluation system in Latvia in areas where it is necessary. Further research directions were identified.
