Abstract
Darbā tika izmantota Piederības universitātei skala (The Belonging to the University Scale; BUS) (Karaman & Cırak, 2017), L. Savielas adaptācijā un Daudzdimensionālā sociālā atbalsta skala (Multdimensional Scales of Perceived Social Support; MSPSS) (Zimet et al., 1988), S. Voitkānes, S. Miezītes un M. Raščevskas adaptācijā. Pētījumā piedalījās 100 respondenti (N=100) vecumā no 18 līdz 34 gadiem (M=21,83; SD=2,97).
Academic belonging is defined as the extent to which individuals feel valued, accepted, and legitimate members of their academic environment (Lewis et al., 2016). The development and strength of a sense of belonging to the academic environment affects students' social and psychological well-being, as well as persistence in the university (Tinto, 1975). Perceived social support is a construct closely related to sense of belonging. It is defined as the availability of social support to an individual and the perceived satisfaction with the support received (Sarason et al., 1990). The aim of the research was to find out whether the sense of academic belonging among the students of the University of Latvia is related to the perceived social support. In addition, several research questions were raised to find out whether there are observable differences in academic sense of belonging and perceived social support between genders, faculties and levels of studies. The Belonging to the University Scale (BUS) (Karaman & Cırak, 2017), adapted by L. Saviela and the Multidimensional Scales of Perceived Social Support; MSPSS) (Zimet et al., 1988), adapted by S. Voitkāne, S. Miezīte and M. Raščevska. 100 respondents (N=100) aged between 18 and 34 (M=21.83; SD=2.97) took part in the study. Of these, 85 were female, 14 were male, and 1 was a person who chose not to state their gender. A statistically significant positive association with higher perceived social support was observed for a higher sense of belonging to the academic environment. However, no statistically significant differences were observed in academic sense of belonging and perceived social support between genders, faculties, and levels of studies. Keywords: academic sense of belonging, perceived social support, students, gender differences
