Abstract
The master’s thesis “Latvia’s fact-checking projects “Re:Check” and “Atmaskots” practice of re-framing social media content: process analysis from 2021 to 2024” was developed with the aim to determine whether the innovative theoretical framework of reframing proposed in this study can account for the practice of fact-checking. Within this thesis reframing refers to a change in the definition of a situation, with changes made by referencing the initial definition of the situation. To achieve change in the definition of a situation, the theoretical framework of reframing includes and sequentially progresses from the theoretical position of frame building to John Swales' genre theory, to Rom Harré's positioning theory. To test the theoretical framework of reframing, mixed-methods research was conducted. Quantitative content analysis was used to analyze the style and format conventions of the fact-checking genre towards which the reframed content is adapted. Additionally, semi-structured interviews with fact-checkers were conducted to analyze how the change in the definition of a situation is influenced by fact-checkers' understanding of the goals of the fact-checking genre, their understanding of their target audience, their understanding of the role of fact-checkers in the social media communication space, and the procedure for selecting claims to fact-check. The master’s thesis concludes that the theoretical framework of reframing allows for a comprehensive apprehension of the practice of fact-checking, which involves a complex set of considerations. As a result, fact-checkers arrive at claims to be verified and change the definition of a situation with the aim of resisting the spread of alternative information flows on social media platforms. The implementation of this aim is based on four elements of fact-checking genre's style: primary definers’ testimonies and knowledge-claims, hyperlinks, truth verdicts, and headline tags. By introducing a new theoretical framework grounded in communication science for understanding fact-checking, future research on this subject is encouraged to further advance this theoretical perspective through empirical studies.
