Abstract
The bachelor's thesis "The effectiveness of risk communication: Latvian residents' crisis action knowledge and its relationship with trust in information sources" explores the public’s knowledge of how to act in crisis situations and its connection to trust in government authorities and emergency services. In the context of contemporary European security and climate challenges, issues related to public preparedness for emergency situations, such as military conflicts, natural disasters, and health crises, have become especially important. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether trust in government authorities is associated with people's knowledge of how to act in crisis situations. The hypothesis raised in the study is that there are differences in the knowledge of citizens aged 45–54 and 65–75 about how to act in crisis situations. To achieve the goal set in the thesis, the author examined the theoretical foundations of effective risk communication and trust in risk communication, as well as conducted a quantitative survey-knowledge test, comparing the knowledge of two age groups (45–54 and 65–75 years). To explore the possible reasons and causes of distrust in government authorities, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Latvian citizens aged 45–54. The results are not representative, but indicate trends. The thesis consists of theoretical, methodological, and empirical sections. The hypothesis posed in the study was ultimately disproved.
