Kontrastējoša retorika: akadēmiskā angļu rakstu valoda Latvijas kontekstā

Abstract

Šis darbs aplūko universitātes studentu akadēmisko eseju retorisko kompozīciju ar mērķi atklāt kopīgas kļūdas un grūtības, kas radās studentiem pielietojot angļu valodas retorisko modēli Latvijas kontekstā. Darba teorētiskajā daļā tiek sniegti pētītā jautājuma un kontrastīvās retoriskās analīzes pielietojuma iespējas ka arī šī pētījuma veikšanas metodes teorētiskie pamatojumi. Šī darba mērķis ir pierādīt, ka atšķirības starp angļu valodas un studentu dzimtās valodas retoriskajiem modeliem izraisa specifiskas problēmas akadēmisko tekstu strukturizācijā; to atšķirību precīza formulēšana var palīdzēt sudentiem izvairīties no grūtībām akadēmiskajā rakstībā angļu valodā un sniegt studentiem informāciju par angļu akadēmiskā teksta organizācijas principiem. Šajā darbā tiek aprakstītas retoriskās atšķirības rakstībā angļu un latviešu valodā, kas ietekmē, kā angļu valodas studenti ar dzimto latviešu valodu raksta angļu valodā, kā arī šis darbs apraksta pieejas rakstības prasmju mācīšanai. Pētījuma veikšanai tika atlasītas un aplūkotas četrdesmit piecas Latvijas Universitates studentu ar dzimto latviešu valodu esejas angļu valodā. Pamatojoties uz šī pētījuma rezultātiem, tiek sniegtas dažas rekomendācijas identificēto problēmu pārvarēšanai. Pētījuma rezultāti var tikt izmantoti efektivākajām angļu valodas akadēmiskās rakstības mācīšanās un mācīšanas procesam.

The present paper investigates the rhetorical composition of university students’ academic essays with the purpose to reveal common errors and difficulties in applying English rhetorical model in Latvian context. The theoretical part of the paper provides a theoretical background to the research question and to the application of contrastive rhetorical analysis as a research method for the present research. The research paper aims at proving that the difference between English rhetorical patterns and those of the students’ native tongue causes specific problems in structuring academic texts; making this difference explicit to the students may help avoid the difficulties in academic writing in English and make students aware of the principles of English academic text organization. The rhetorical differences between Latvian and English writing that influence how Latvian EFL students write in English are described in this paper as well as the approaches to teaching writing are reviewed. Forty-five essays written in English by Latvian students from the University of Latvia were collected and examined. Based on the findings of the research, some recommendations are given to overcome the identified problems. The results of this research can be used in order to make the process of teaching and learning English academic writing more effective.
