Abstract
In the master's thesis "Challenges in accessing health care services for homeless people in Latvia: a case study as a basis for further research," the accessibility of health care was examined for one of the most socially vulnerable groups in society- the homeless. Homelessness is a significant social issue in Latvia. Access to healthcare for homeless individuals is one of the most important aspects of their inclusion in society, to maintain their physical, mental, and psychological health. However, this access is often hindered by various systemic, administrative, and social factors. Given that homelessness affects not only the social sphere but also healthcare and human rights, the topic of the study is particularly relevant. It highlights the need for cross-sectoral cooperation and for new, evidence-based solutions to improve access to healthcare services for the homeless. This case study provides a foundation for broader future research and policy development aimed at achieving more equitable access to healthcare for all members of society, regardless of their place of residence or social status. The aim of the study was to determine the availability of healthcare services for homeless individuals within the Latvian healthcare system. The tasks of the study were to conduct a literature review on the availability of medical services for homeless individuals within the healthcare system in Latvia. To analyse Kallista Roy's Adaptation Model of Nursing, as well as Jean Watson’s nursing theories. To develop a research instrument – interview questions. To interview individuals without a fixed place of residence, as well as stakeholders involved in working with people without a fixed place of residence. The research question that was raised: What is the availability of medical services for homeless individuals within the healthcare system in Latvia? The research approach was qualitative, using the case study method. This approach allowed for an in-depth examination of specific problems and situations based on real-life examples related to homeless individuals' access to healthcare. It enabled the analysis of these issues in context, providing a deeper understanding of problems that are not covered by overly simplified or generalized research methods. The study used structured interviews with homeless individuals, which helped to understand their experiences, needs, and perceptions regarding access to healthcare in Latvia. Interviews were also conducted with healthcare workers and social workers, which allowed for an understanding of the challenges they face when working with homeless individuals and how these challenges affect the availability of services. This approach provided a multifaceted perspective on the situation, considering both the viewpoints of service recipients and providers. The study on the healthcare experience of homeless individuals, using nine respondents, provides valuable insight into the accessibility of healthcare and its c
