Lecturer Ineta Aizporiete Volume of the diploma paper: 67 pages, 2 schemes, 20 images, 4 charts, bibliography - 51 sources Aim: to go into the theoretical aspects for develop the self-awareness of 5 – 6 years’ old children by means of a game The theoretical part of the diploma paper based on cognitions of D.Dzintere, R.I.Kanepeja and D.Liegeniece. The literature on the substance of a game, its kinds, functions and methods have been analyzed. Question about what is self-awareness and how it develops has been clarified, as well as the way how to contribute to self-awareness of pre-school age children by means of a game. In the practical part of the diploma paper pedagogical observations in a pre-school educational institution have been carried out, by analyzing game situations among 5-6 year-old children, observing how the self-awareness of children have been contributed to and stimulated. Analysis of literature, observation of children during games, summary of information from discussions with children, as well as interviews with teachers of pre-school educational institutions and questionnaires with children’s parents have been taken into account in order to clarify the role of game in contribution to the self-awareness of children. Conclusions: Game as a means of contribution to the self-awareness has been regarded as an influential educational and teaching opportunity, because it lets us to understand the child’s experience, to find out its wishes and interests, helps us to see the level of its intellectual development, its ability to obey rules of behavior, ability to regulate relationship with children of the same age. The best way to contribute to the self-awareness of a child is to make deserved praises, supporting and respecting its ideas and letting it act and play freely.
