Abstract
The bachelor’s thesis examines the impact of the shadow economy on the construction sector in Latvia, focusing on the business environment and operational practices of SIA “Pillar”. The theoretical part of the thesis explores the concept and structure of the shadow economy, its causes, manifestations, and the challenges it poses to law-abiding companies. It also analyses relevant regulatory frameworks in Latvia and the role of public institutions in reducing informal economic activity. The empirical part consists of an employee survey, which aims to assess awareness of shadow economy risks, transparency of internal controls, and the thoroughness of partner evaluation procedures. In addition, a semi-structured expert interview provides insight into the real-life challenges and solutions faced by professionals in the industry. The research is complemented by financial data analysis and a SWOT assessment of the company. Based on the collected data, the thesis presents practical recommendations for the management and key departments of SIA “Pillar” to strengthen transparency, improve risk management, and enhance competitiveness in a sector where shadow economy practices remain prevalent
