Abstract
The aim of the bachelor’s thesis research is to find out how the attitude of parents of preschool children towards grief, their knowledge about the grief symptoms in children and the parenting sense of competence are interconnected, and whether there are differences in knowledge about the grief symptoms in preschool children between mothers and fathers. The selection of the study consisted of 118 respondents aged 24 to 58 years (M = 37,53; SD = 5,45), who had at least one child aged 3-6 and who had experienced grief at least once. The following instruments were used for the measurements: Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (Johnston & Mash, 1989), Adult Attitude to Grief Scale (Machin, 2001) and a survey created by the author of the study on parents' knowledge about the grief symptoms in preschool children. The results of the study showed a statistically significant positive correlation between parenting sense of competence (mothers) and the attitude towards grief subscale “Resilient”, parenting sense of competence (mothers) and the attitude towards grief subscale “Satisfaction” and the attitude towards grief subscale “Overwhelmed”, parenting sense of competence (mothers) and the attitude towards grief subscale “Satisfaction”, parenting sense of competence (mothers) and the attitude towards grief subscale “Resilient”, which means that higher scores on one scale are also associated with higher scores on the other scale and vice versa. In the fathers' sample, the results of the correlation analysis indicate that there are statistically positive associations between the subscale of parenting sense of competence (fathers) "Effectiveness" and the subscale of attitudes towards grief "Resilient", which means that higher scores on one scale are also associated with higher scores on the other scale and vice versa. However, statistically negative associations are observed in the fathers' sample between the subscale of parenting sense of competence (fathers) "Satisfaction" and the subscale of attitudes towards grief "Overwhelmed", as well as statistically negative associations are observed between parenting sense of competence (fathers) and knowledge about the grief symptoms in preschool children, and between parenting sense of competence (fathers) and the subscale of attitudes towards grief "Overwhelmed", which means that as scores on one scale increase, scores on the other scale decrease. In turn, in the sample as a whole, a statistically significant negative relationship was observed between parents' knowledge about the grief symptoms in preschool children and the attitude towards grief subscale "Controlled", which means that as the scores on one scale increase, the scores on the other scale decrease. Key words: grief, preschool children, parenting sense of competence, adult attitude to grief.
