Abstract

The aim of the bachelor thesis “The Reflection of Political Parties in “Panorama” – the Broadcast Program of the Latvian Television – in the Preelection Period of the 9th Saeima” is to find out the principles that the Latvian Television have followed when broadcasted the events regarding the elections of the 9th Saeima. In the theoretical part of the bachelor thesis the author describes such issues as the vision of various media researchers about the news selection process in the election period, the specifics of the interpretation of political news, the interview as the information obtaining method, etc. The author has applied the quantitative research method – content analysis – on the news pieces broadcasted by “Panorama” during the two months period before the elections of the 9th Saeima. The author has examined how frequently particular political parties and their candidates appear in the news pieces, the context of the news pieces, as well as the effects that have been used to highlight the message of the news pieces. Furthermore, the qualitative research method – interview – has been applied to gain insight, how journalists explain the circumstances that have disturbed them to reflect better the events regarding the elections in their news pieces. The author concludes that the right parties that already hold power appear more frequently in the news pieces than the left and small political parties. Likewise, the author finds that the personal knowledge of journalists and their own vision how the news pieces should look like, as well as the producer’s conditions in some cases have determined the outline and contents of the news pieces, and there has not been a common approach how to reflect the events in the election period. The bachelor thesis proves that more attention has been paid to negative or scandalous events and that the existing and potential conflicts have been underlined in each news piece. The structure of the bachelor thesis is as follows: the theoretical part, the methodological part, the empirical part, and the analytical part. Key words: political news, television, news piece, preelection period.
