The present Bachelors Thesis examines and analyzes the meaning of roads and streets in the following novels by Charles Dickens: David Copperfield, Great Expectations and Hard Times. This work consists of an Introduction, three Chapters and Conclusions. The chapters contain analysis of use and meaning of the roads and streets in the novels, as well as analysis of the characters and culture in the time setting of 19th century England and Industrial revolution. Usage of words ‘roads’ and ‘streets’ as well as their synonyms in the novels was closely observed, examined and analyzed. The results of research show that roads and streets are a powerful metaphor in Dickens’s novels, and thus serve as ‘witnesses’, by being everywhere and providing intricate maps for interpretation.en_US
