Abstract
The Bachelor paper “The Maronites role in creation of the state of Lebanon” is dedicated to find out the role of the Maronites starting from the middle of 19th century, when Maronite society started to recognize themselves as a nation and the first ideas of hawing their own independent country are starting to appear, till the proclamation of independent Republic of Lebanon in 1943. Nowadays the state of Lebanon is located next to the Mediterranean Sea and is bordering with Syria and Israel. Although exact date when the Republic of Lebanon was proclaimed is nonexistent, what only indicates the harsh circumstances in which the country was born, it gained its independence in the year 1943 and, regardless to many wars that this country has experienced since then, has preserved it. The format or Lebanon’s government is unique and unseen in any other country. Confessionalism is a governing system created as a compromise so that the country can exist at all. The Maronites were able to govern alone only with a strong support of France, or to be precise, while France dictated the rules and practically ruled the territories of Lebanon, Maronites as a loyal partner had the opportunity to gain relative power. At the time when France had to abandon Levant ant its influence eased, Maronites had no other choice but to face the reality – power sharing was inevitable. The aim of this paper is to find out what exactly was the Lebanon’s Maronites role in creating the state of Lebanon and to answer the question in what degree the Maronite Church and Patriarch influenced politics at the time and did Maronites had any chance of having their own country with out the help of Europe.
