Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze Daniel Dennett's evolutionary approach to consciousness. This is achieved by a brief overview of the problems in studies of consciousness and their historical solutions, a review of Dennett's proposed method for studying consciousness – heterophenomenology, and analysis of Dennett's evolutionary narrative that aims to describe the emergence of human mentality. It is concluded that this evolutionary analysis shows consciousness to be an extremely complex phenomenon, that basis for Dennett's mechanical descriptions of conscious processes can be found in this analysis, and, finally, it is shown that one of the ways of thinking about consciousness that Dennett proposes – consciousness as a Joycean machine – is an oversimplification of the results obtained in the evolutionary analysis of consciousness.
