Abstract
The purpose of this study was: 1) to study the smile characteristics of Latvian and Uzbek natives in the age group of 20-35 years, 2) and to compare the smile perception and self-content with the smile among Latvian and Uzbek population. Methods: 1) Photographs of a full smile of fifty participants from Latvia and fifty participants from Uzbekistan were taken and the esthetic characteristics (smile type, smile symmetry, number of teeth displayed in a smile, position of maxillary incisor edge relative to touching the lower lip, position of maxillary anterior incisal curvature in relationship to lower lip) of the smiles were studied. 2) Questionnaire was created in Latvian, Uzbek, English and Russian to assess smile perception of participants. Questionnaire was sent to the participants, and was used to assess perception of the smile and self-content with the appearance of the smile between Latvian and Uzbek participants. Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test and Spearman test were performed to analyze the association between ethnic groups and variables. SPSS 27.0 software (IBM Corp.) was used for data analysis. Results: Significant difference was observed in prevalence of smile type (p = 0.009) and number of teeth displayed in a smile (p = 0.05) among Latvian and Uzbek participants. 42 % Latvian and 32 % Uzbek participants who responded to the questionnaire underwent orthodontic treatment. Equal amount of respondents from both countries (9 participants) were satisfied with orthodontic treatment outcome. Self-perception of the smile was significantly different between two groups (p = 0.004). Higher number of participants from Uzbekistan were fulfilled with esthetic appearance of their smile. We found that 44 % respondents from Uzbekistan and 16 % respondents from Latvia would not change anything. However, from those who would like to change any features of their smile, most participants would like to change the color of their teeth (50 % of Latvian respondents and 26 % of Uzbek respondents). We observed that average smile line and maxillary incisal curvature parallel in relationship to the lower lip are preferred smile designs of participants from both countries. Conclusion: Differences in smile characteristics and self-perception of the smile was observed between Latvian and Uzbek population. However, significant difference in smile perception between two ethnic groups was not noticed.
