Abstract
The theoretical part of the thesis ‘Syntactic Criterial Features in Assessing Written Performance in English and French’ contains the analysis of different approaches towards linguistic unit acquisition as well as highlights the main principles in assessing written performance in compliance with the Common European Framework. The quantitative and qualitative research of the syntactic structures produced by the English and French language learners is based upon the results of the contrastive analysis of the syntactic structures retrieved from the contemporary descriptive grammars. The obtained data are used to develop syntactic criterial features for each language proficiency level (A1 – C1) both in English and French, which will ensure the reliability of test results. Key words: language acquisition, written performance assessment, syntactic structures, data analysis based on corpus, criterial features.
