Abstract
it īpaši ielu protestu rīkošanā.
The Impact of New Information and Communications Technologies on Protest Movements Andrejs Berdņikovs Abstract My thesis has been worked out in the field of social movement studies and it makes an important contribution to social movement theory. I have found that previous theoretical approaches are not able to explain crucial changes in the activities of protest movements during last decade, especially in the area of street protests. These changes have been caused by the increasing role of new information and communications technologies (ICTs) in contemporary social activism. The main limitations of the previous approaches pertain to the failure of social movement scholars to distinguish between protest movements based on wide sections of population (“masses”) and ones based on professional activists (“cadres”). On the basis of empirical findings, I have developed a theoretical model that helps to understand different motivations for using ICTs in organizing and coordinating street protests.
