Abstract
The objective of the study was to 1) examine whether self-compassion mediates the relationship between self-reliance and psychological distress, as well as life satisfaction; 2) evaluate whether practicing self-compassion increases students’ self-compassion, self-reliance, and life satisfaction, and decreases psychological distress. Two studies were conducted: a cross-sectional study (N=82) and an experimental study (N=10). The study employed the Self-Compassion Scale (Neff, 2003b), the Self-Efficacy Scale (Padhy et al., 2024), the Satisfaction With Life Scale (Diener et al., 1985), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995, 2004). The results revealed that self-compassion fully mediates the relationship between self-reliance and both psychological distress and life satisfaction. A significant increase in self-compassion was observed in the experimental group; however, no significant changes were found in the other variables.
