Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore whether emotional intelligence, compassion fatigue, gender, age, length of service, and training attendance are associated with police officers’ actions in domestic violence cases. 243 police officers in Latvia participated in the study. The following instruments were used: The Self – Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SREIT) (Schutte et al., 1998), Compassion fatigue scale short version (CF-Short) (Adams et.al.,2006), questionnaire on police officers’ actions in domestic violence cases. Results showed that higher emotional intelligence, especially emotional regulation, was associated with more active and preventive behavior. Female and more experienced officers were more likely to choose active or preventive approaches. No statistically significant association was found between compassion fatigue and behavioral factors. A negative association was found between training attendance and passive behavior.
