Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between optimism, empathy and empathic concern and emotional exhaustion among healthcare professionals and its ability to predict it. The correlative cross-sectional study sample consists of 273 physicians, medical residents, nurses, and nursing assistants from five hospitals. The survey includes scales from the Life Orientation Test-Revised, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey. The five hypotheses of the study were partially confirmed. Statistically significant negative relationships were found between emotional exhaustion and optimism and the age of the respondents, as well as the ability of optimism to predict it. No relationships were found between empathy and empathic concern and emotional exhaustion, as well as its ability to predict it. No differences in emotional exhaustion between nurses and medical residents and other professions were confirmed.
