The theme of the bachelor’s thesis is „Eleos in the Composition and Language of Greek Tragedies”. The object of investigation is the display of eleos in the composition and language of Greek tragedies. Eleos (ὁ ἔλεος) means „pity, mercy, compassion” in translation from ancient Greek. Aristotle has already spoken about eleos in the tractate „Poetics”, when the tragedy is defined. Eleos is described as one of the two aspects, which enables to experience catharsis.
There are analyzed three tragedies in the investigation: Aeschylus „Prometheus Bound”, Sophhocles „Antigone” and Euripides „Electra”. The first chapter of the bachelor’s thesis is theoretical, and there are considered the ancient theater, greek tragedy, catharsis, eleos creation techniques and tradedy’s language in lexicology. The second and the third chapter is the practical investigation. The second chapter shows, how eleos is displayed in the plot and composition of tragedy. There is investigated and classified the vocabulary, which characterizes eleos in the third chapter.
Primarily poet creats eleos by the complex plot, which includes detection discoveries and reversals. Then he reflects the good/noble characters, who permit a sierious mistake and suffer without its fault. The vocabulary is subordinated by the plot and characters, though it is also important. The vocabulary is abundanter, when the plot of the tragedy is simple. Then eleos mostly is created by the vocabulary, not by the plot.
