The aim of the paper is to find out how significant is the political potential attributed to photography by the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, and how, on the basis of his ideas, the criticism of the establishment and the reflection of woman in the Dadaism, Surrealism, and Postmodernism photography can be analysed. In order to achieve this aim, basically two works of Benjamin are analysed: “The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technical Reproducibility” and “Little History of Photography”. In the first part of the research, a relation between photography and modernity, and visual art are described; the role of the photography in the Benjamin’s call to turn against Fascism and the relationship of the photography and more extensive changes in the society are explained, as well. In the second and third part of the paper, using the viewpoints of Benjamin on the tasks of photography, film and avant-garde (found not only in the works mentioned above), the examples are provided on how the turning against of human objectification by particular Dadaism, Surrealism and Postmodernism photographers can be explained. Keywords: Benjamin, photography, Modernism, modernity, politics, Fascism, Communism, society, gender, Dadaism, Surrealism, Postmodernism.
