The present paper is aimed at analyzing the existing methods and theories on teaching speaking and on teaching mixed ability groups and the ways in which they can be combined in order to help all students in a class irrespective of their language proficiency develop and achieve positive results. The purpose of the paper is thus to find a possible solution to the problem of dealing with groups of students with mixed abilities, which is a rather common problem in secondary schools in Latvia. There are a number of methods used in the research: it starts with a literature review, which provides theoretical and methodological basis to the research and is followed by the experimental part, consisting of three stages and testing the effectiveness of the task-based learning method on a group of students with mixed abilities, which includes testing, questionnaire work, and data analysis. The results of the research speak in favour of the effectiveness of the method chosen for the experiment and prove the possibility of effective work with classes with mixed abilities. Among the main conclusions made on the basis of the findings is the statement that successful and fruitful work with mixed ability groups presupposes the use of special methods developed to suit different students‟ needs, and requites the teacher‟s awareness of the students‟ characteristics and individual peculiarities and thorough lesson planning. Key terms: speaking skills, mixed-ability, task-based learning, differentiation; zone of mutual development
