Abstract

Šis darbs ir pētījums par pilna teikuma definīcijām Kobilda vārdnīcās. Pētījums sastāv no teorētiskās un praktiskās daļas. Teorētiskajā daļā tiek apspriestas šādas tēmas: galvenie definīciju veidi angļu vienvalodas vārdnīcās, raksturīgākās pilna teikuma definīciju iezīmes, pilna teikuma definīciju trūkumi un priekšrocības, objektvaloda un metavaloda, dažādu vārdu šķiru definīcijas Kobilda vārdnīcās. Praktiskā daļa ir balstīta uz Collins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary (2009) un Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1998). Pētījuma mērķis ir parādīt vai pilna teikuma definīcijas ir vienmēr vienlīdz piemērotas dažādu vārdu šķiru - lietvārdu, darbības vārdu un īpašības vārdu, definēšanai. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir parādīt un raksturot dažādas definīcijas angļu vienvalodas vārdnīcās, parādīt kāda ir pilna teikuma definīciju vieta starp tām, norādīt uz pilna teikuma definīciju galvenajām priekšrocībām un problēmām. Teorētiskais pētījums un praktiskā analīze pierāda, ka pilna teikuma definīcijas vairāk vai mazāk veiksmīgi definē vārdus atkarībā no tā, kuras vārdu šķiras tiek definētas.

This paper is a research about Sentential Definitions in Cobuild Dictionaries. The research consist of the theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part the following subjects are discussed: the main types of definitions in English monolingual dictionaries, the typical features of sentential definitions, disadvantages and advantages of sentential definitions, object language and metalanguage, different parts of speech defined by sentential definitions in Cobuild dictionaries. The practical part is based on Collins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary (2009) and Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1998) and the goal of the research is to show whether full sentence definitions are always equally appropriate to define different parts of speech, namely: nouns, verbs and adjectives. The purpose of this paper is to show and describe different types of definitions in English monolingual dictionaries and to detect the place of full sentence definitions among them, to point out both the main advantages and problems concerning full sentence definitions. The theoretical research and the practical analysis shows that full sentence definitions can be successful or less successful and that depends on what parts of speech are defined.
