| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | The master’s thesis focuses on examining the meaning of the androgynous image in the Japanese popular culture. Considering the fact that the androgynous image has become ubiquitous in the Japanese popular culture and the Japanese culture also is more and more permeating the West, the focal point of the paper is the significance of gender ambivalence in the popular culture and its influence on society.
The objectives of the paper comprise understanding the concept of androgyny in various products of the Japanese popular culture and comprehending its significance amongst the fans and in the Japanese society, as well as examining the critique and the issues related with this phenomenon.
Using such examples as the products of the Japanese popular culture in which the androgyne holds a unique significance, the paper proposes possible reasons of the phenomenon’s popularity and success amongst young women and identifies its effect on the structure of the modern Japanese society, particularly, in perception regarding the gender role division.
Per results of the studies in this paper, gender ambivalence in the Japanese popular culture is a product that mainly has resulted from women’s desires and is consumed by women in a manner which can be described as a protest against the traditional gender roles. In addition, androgyny is an opportunity to experiment with one’s gender identity and sexuality by identifying with certain characters of the popular culture, and it might be an indicator of future changes in the gender roles.
The paper consists of three parts which examine the development and significance of an androgynous image in certain products of the Japanese popular culture. The paper includes 77 pages and appendix. | en_US |
