Šis maģistra darbs pēta neverbālās komunikācijas atspoguļojuma funkcijas masu medijos. Darbs sastāv no piecām nodaļām. The present Master’s thesis explores the functions underlying the representation of body language in printed media. The first chapter examines theoretical sources on the body as discourse from the semiotic, cultural and pragmatic perspectives. The second chapter discusses how bodily cues should be interpreted and what functions non-verbal communication performs. The third chapter describes media as agents of power in terms of dissemination of ideology, representations of people’s non-verbal behaviour and the effects upon media audiences. The fourth chapter uncovers the theme of the semiotics of body language by paying particular attention to the nature of visual signs and their meanings in various contexts. Meanwhile, the fifth chapter presents the results of the analysis of the conducted research into the representation of body language in visual images of the printed media in Latvia, the UK and the USA. The overall aim of the research is to prove that nowadays the press is aware of the power of the combination of the verbal and non-verbal aspects of the message and uses images to produce the intended effect on the audience.
