Computer games offer unexplored opportunities for language learners to implicitly acquire English vocabulary. This Bachelor thesis attempts to understand if and how vocabulary acquisition takes place and determine what vocabulary learning strategies are employed while playing life simulation computer game The Sims 3. For this purpose, data was collected with the help of vocabulary self-tests and the think aloud method. Additionally, a computer programme that analyses lexical frequency of words in texts was used to assess game texts. The results suggest that while playing the game only partial vocabulary acquisition occurs. The player prefers the use of the vocabulary learning strategies that do not interfere with the game. In addition, playing the game automatically enables the use of meta-cognitive strategies.
Key words: vocabulary acquisition, word knowledge, vocabulary learning strategies (VLS), think aloud protocol, computer games.
