veidiem.
Diplomdarbā tiek izpētīts skolēnu rakstīšanas procesa progress svešvalodas stundās no
The role of the writing process in modern society has increased. Writing plays an
important role for educational, business and personal communication.
For a long time writing in foreign language was taught by completing fill-in-the-blanks.
However, writing process can be more creative.
One of the most common ways of communication is letter writing. Therefore, the author
of the present paper focuses on letter writing as one of types of creative writing. The paper
explores student progress in writing when the writing task is formulated/stressed as creative
and investigates the writing process in foreign language learning from the point of view of its
creativity.
The author analyses theories on creativity, gives the definition of creativity and creative
writing. It outlines features of creativity and their measurement.
To prove the hypothesis that creativity positively influences the development of foreign
language learners’ writing skills. The research has been undertaken in Riga Secondary School
No 94 in Forms 7a and 7b.
The research is based on Wallas’s (1926), Barron’s (1963), Torrance’s (1966) and
Flaherty’s (2005) theories of creativity.
Creativity in students’ written samples has been measured accounting creative
characteristics (fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration and appropriateness), at three levels
(stimulative-productive, evolutionary and creative), and in three layers (linguistic form,
semantic content/concept and pragmatic frame).
In the empirical research the author has compared the results of quantative measurement
and analyzed learners’ written samples (informal letters) when the task was and was not
stressed/formulated as creative. The results have demonstrated that the student produced the
works at the re-productive levels (stimulative-productive with non-creative task, and
evolutionary with creative task). However, if the task was not stressed/formulated as creative,
all characteristics of creativity were lower than the results when the task was
stressed/formulated as creative.
Creative writing tasks stimulate students’ awareness of the language, their curiosity and
motivate them to write.
Increased students’ levels of creativity lead to the development of writing skills.
