The author’s teaching experience shows that EFL learners find reading in English truly beneficial in terms of developing their language proficiency, which has compelled the author to conduct the research in the field of reading. She has been interested to uncover the aspects of the activity in question that make EFL learners wholly dependent on it. Hence, the aim of the master paper is to explore the students’ attitudes to and gains from reading fiction and non-fiction discourse. To conduct the research, the author employs both theoretical and practical methods, viz. the study of general academic background in the field of teaching reading, the instructor’s observations of the learning environments, quality conversations with her students and the teacher’s self-reflection upon the given lessons. The author of the present thesis has come to the following conclusions. First, EFL learners find reading advantageous, since it provides pleasure and entertainment, generates thought-provoking ideas, offers opportunities for personalisation with fictional experience and promotes in-class communication. Second, though the author’s students claim that fiction and non-fiction are equally beneficial in terms of developing language proficiency, they exhibit apparent preference for prose literature over journalistic discourse. The author ventures to explain this discrepancy by referring to the fact that fiction, unlike non-fiction, appeals to the reader’s emotions.
