The conducted review of the literature on the development of writing skills reveals the gap in empirical research concerning the use of social media for developing language complexity. The aim of the research presented in this MA thesis was to investigate the use of academic weblogs at the secondary level for developing written language complexity in English as a foreign language.
The main research method applied in the study was quasi-experiment. To obtain the empirical data, 100 essays were collected and statistically analysed. A significant difference has been revealed between the results of the target and the control groups in developing their written language complexity. The results of the quasi-experiment demonstrate that the students in the target group that actively participated in CMC during the experiment have developed both lexical and syntactic complexity to much higher extent than the students in the control group. The analysis of the survey results and individual interviews has shown that students from the target group have also changed their attitude towards the writing process into a positive one and become more motivated. The findings indicate that academic weblogs are useful tools for developing students’ written language complexity; therefore, they may be recommended for English language teaching and learning.
Key words: EFL writing, lexical complexity, syntactic complexity, weblogs.
