Blood flow restriction to working muscles allows to significantly reduce exercise intensity that is necessary for activation of hypertrophic processes and for improvements of aerobic capacity. So far hypertrophic effects of blood flow restriction have been investigated mostly in relation to resistance exercises. There is a lack of information concerning hemodynamic and hormonal responses to acute dynamic exercise with blood flow restriction. Therefore in the current study the stress on the cardiovascular system caused by the blood flow restriction was estimated during low-intensity cycling exercise. In addition, hormonal responses were assessed. Results indicate that even though blood flow restriction raises circulatory response and puts a greater strain on the myocardial function, level of stress is lower than during a traditional moderate-intensity aerobic exercise. At the same time muscle blood flow restriction stimulates the release of anabolic growth hormone.
Key words: blood flow restriction, growth hormone, heart rate variability, double product.
