Efficient and purposeful use of language in political speeches allow the speaker to achieve socially significant aims, to persuade the addressees to accept some ideas or opinions and affect their consciousness; therefore, in recent years there has been a growing interest in the analysis and evaluation of political speeches. The present bachelor thesis is aimed at investigating the use and the role of metaphors in political speeches, employed to pursue specific political goals. The theoretical methods comprised a summative analysis of essential theories about the use of manipulative strategies in political discourse. The empirical research method employed was the discourse analysis, which involved the analysis of metaphors used in ten political speeches delivered by Condoleezza Rice, the former United States Secretary of State, and ten speeches delivered by Barack Obama, the President of the United States. The results showed that metaphors can serve as a tool of linguistic manipulation aimed to influence the audience’s opinion. It was found that the most frequent motivating factors for the use of metaphors in political speeches enables political actors to achieve the political goals. It has been concluded that metaphor is an effective manipulative strategy implemented in political speeches to either invoke a feeling of trust towards the governments or to express criticism towards irresponsible actions and enlist the support of the audience.
