The master’s thesis “Peculiarities of Written and Spoken Language of the Blind” is the continuation of the work about Braille as a basic writing system for the blind nowadays; the theme had been begun in the bachelor's paper. The author extends this theme, researching the speech peculiarities of blind people. As far as the author knows, in linguistics there are no researches of the speech peculiarities of the blind, so in this work the conclusions which can be found in special literature for the blind, i.e. typhlopsychology and typhlopedagogy, are summarized. The purpose of the work is to conduct a wide investigation of the speech peculiarities of the blind, and provide the important information about the Braille writing system and its usage at the present time. The author is blind herself, so she wants to share her experience with other people.
The work consists of 6 chapters with subdivisions and 11 appendices containing the blind authors’ verses, as well as the pictures related to the Braille system and various modern technologies. The theoretical part is based on the Russian typhlopsychologs’ and typhlopedagogs’ researches on the peculiarities of blind children’s speech development, and the practical part is based on blind respondents' views and the author’s own experience. The first three chapters cover the compensatory role of the speech and thinking of the blind in world cognition, the peculiarities of blind children’s speech development, and the role of the language’s prosodic methods in communication. The next chapter devoted to how the blind form notions; blind and partially sighted people’s differences in notions are analyzed, perception of colors and nature in blind people are surveyed, usage of the words related with visual activities in speech of the blind is researched, and the role of books in their life is emphasized. The penultimate chapter deals with the peculiarities of poetry of the blind, but the final chapter presents materials of history and development of the Braille system, and how it is used in modern technologies nowadays; the peculiarities of the editing and proofreading Braille books are described also. Besides, this chapter includes conclusions about the essential role of the Braille in the author's life and her respondents’ ones.
