Bret Easton Ellis’s novel ‘American Psycho’ may be perceived as a sharp satire on the state of contemporary consumer society, where ownership of commodities not only determines one’s social status but also influences the formation of one’s social and personal identity. The aim of this research is to analyze the interaction between the development of consumer society and its effects upon identity formation, such as identity crisis and such subsequent tendencies as alienation, deindividuation, violence and sexual excess in ‘American Psycho’ by Bret Easton Ellis. By accomplishing the goal of the research, the author of the Bachelor thesis was able to conclude that identity crisis of the protagonist of the novel is caused by the pressure of consumer society. The identity formation of the protagonist is embedded in such dominant principle of consumer society, as desire to choose the right commodities and services in order to fit in with a particular social group. Moreover, one’s self-perception is influenced by mass media, fashion industry and popular culture. The inability to construct a stable and full-fledged personal and social identity results in a sense of alienation, deindividuation, violent tendencies and sexual excess. The aforementioned tendencies are not only the consequences of identity crisis, but can also be perceived as failing attempts to regain and consolidate protagonist’s identity.
