The present Master thesis is dedicated to analysing postcolonial features in Brian Friel’s four plays: “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”, “Aristocrats”, “Translations” and “Dancing at Lughnasa”. Ireland has a long history of English colonial rule which influenced the national identity of the Irish people as well as the society, culture and economy of Ireland.
Brian Friel is a living classic of Irish postcolonial literature. He is powerful in depicting the destructive influence of the English on the Irish society. Brian Friel depicts the staunch character of the Irish people and brings out such postcolonial effects as identity crisis, emigration, economic backwardness and hybridity of cultures.
