| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | In the work „Metaphors in Printed Advertisements” the author analyzes excerpted metaphors in advertising catalogues of cosmetic products, household goods and vegetable goods. The work contains separately examined examples of merging and abutment of metonymies and metaphors. For the analysis “Oriflame”, “Avon”, “Select”, “Hansapost”, “Bakker” catalogues are selected. The work provides the review of theory on the language of advertising, metaphors and cases of merging and abutment of metaphors and metonymies.
Metaphors are inherently conceptual, and advertisements are its main means of expression. In the catalogues of cosmetic products the most frequently used features, connecting source domain and target domain, are colour, value and refinement, but in the catalogues of household goods the most frequent features are appearance, shape. The most popular features in the catalogues of vegetable goods are appearance and shape.
The most popular and complicated metaphorical transfers of meaning are found in the catalogues of cosmetic products. Such catalogues also contain the greatest amount of unsuccessful, hyperbolic metaphors, and interactions of metaphors and metonymies.
Key words: metaphor, the language of advertising, metonymy, source domain, target domain. | en_US |
