Vārdu krājuma pilnveidošana izmantojot lasīšanu

Abstract

Diplomdarba pētījumā autore koncentrējas uz vārdu krājuma pilnveidošanas un paplašināšanas iespējām izmantojot specializēto tekstu lasīšanu profesionālās angļu valodas nodarbībās. Ir vispāratzīts, ka pastāv saistība starp lasītāja vārdu krājuma apjomu un teksta izpratni. Attīstot lasīšanas prasmi, tiek pilnveidots arī vārdu karājums, un otrādi – vārdu krājuma paplašināšana sekmē lasīšanas prasmes attīstību. Diplomdarba tēma tika izvēlēta gan tās aktualitātes dēļ, ikdienā strādājot ar studentiem Latvijas Lauksaimniecības Universitātē, gan arī lai paplašinātu autores zināšanas par profesionālo angļu valodu, vārdu krājuma apguvi un vārdu krājuma paplašināšanu izmantojot lasīšanu. Pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot, kā studentu vārdu krājuma apjoms var tikt paplašināts izmantojot lasīšanai profesionālos tekstus, kas atbilst studentu vajadzībām. Diplomdarbu veido divas nodaļas – teorētiskā un empīriskā daļa. Teorētiskajā daļā tiek raksturota profesionālā angļu valoda (ESP), tās pamatprincipi, apskatīti jautājumi, kas attiecas uz vārdu krājumu un lasīšanas procesu. Empīriskajā daļā analizēts gadījuma pētījums, kas veikts Latvijas Lauksaimniecības Universitātes Sociālo zinātņu fakultātē ar pilna laika pirmā kursa Organizāciju socioloģijas un sabiedrības pārvaldes specialitātes studentu grupu. Pētījuma autore apstiprina, ka saskaņā ar gadījuma pētījuma analīzi, vārdu krājuma paplašināšanas uzdevumi, izmantojot lasīšanai tekstus, kas atbilst studentu vajadzībām ir pilnvērtīgi izmantojami profesionālās angļu valodas nodarbībās. Šis pētījums var tikt izmantots profesionālās angļu valodas nodarbībās kā noderīgs materiāls plānojot vārdu krājuma paplašināšanu un pilnveidi izmantojot lasīšanu.

The present paper focuses on possibilities to develop and expand the students’ vocabulary through reading texts typical of the particular field during the ESP classes. It is agreed that close relation exists between vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. Vocabulary knowledge and reading are complementary. On the one hand, developing reading skills helps to expand vocabulary knowledge and on the other hand, increasing vocabulary helps to improve reading. The theme of the paper was chosen considering its topicality working with the students at the Latvia University of Agriculture as well as for the purpose of broadening author’s knowledge of ESP, vocabulary acquisition, development of vocabulary through reading and its incorporation in the ESP classroom. The aim of the research is to investigate how the students’ vocabulary can be developed through reading in relation to the students’ needs. The paper consists of two parts – the theoretical and the empirical part. In the theoretical part, the author has presented a description of ESP and its main principles, the outline of theories concerning vocabulary acquisition and the overview of reading process. The empirical part contains the analysis of the case study carried out at the Latvia University of Agriculture, Faculty of Social Sciences with a group of the first year full time students of undergraduate programme in sociology of organizations and public management. The author of the paper claims that, according to the analysis of the case study, the tasks for vocabulary acquisition using the reading texts, selected according to the students’ needs are effective in ESP classes. This research can be used in ESP classes as useful material for expanding and developing learners’ vocabulary through reading.
