Carabid beetles are good bioindicators of environmental quality, however there is lack of information about their ecology and possibility to use them to evaluate environmental problems in Latvia. The aim of this work is to characterize species composition, number of individuals and communities of carabid beetles, and to find out most important biotic and abiotic factors, which influence carabid beetle communities.
The research was done in forests of Ziemeļvidzeme Biosphere Reserve near Vitrupe, beetles were caught by use of pitfall traps. Also data about the cover of plant species, stand formula, soil pH, moisture and shading were collected. Together 6050 beetles belonging to 60 species were collected.
Different forest types have different carabid beetle communities. Dryopteriosa is a specific forest type with many indicator species. Number of beetle species and individuals is influenced by vegetation, dead wood and soil moisture. Influence of soil pH and shading is not significant.
