dc.description.abstract | Rhododendrons are one of the most widely used ornamental plants in the world and Latvia as well. As the number of varieties of rhododendrons is growing steadily, it is important to investigate and to improve the propagation methods, so rhododendrons can be better reproduced.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the mother plant etiolation on rhizogenesis and overwinter survival of deciduous cuttings.
Experiment was set up for two light treatments for mother plants – ‘sun' and 'etiolation'. Rhododendrons of treatment ‘sun’ were grown under natural daylight, while rhododendrons of ‘etiolation’ were grown in a greenhouse under a black film to rule out the effect of light on plants. Period of etiolation lasted four weeks. After etiolation mother plants were allowed to acclimate for 4 weeks.
To investigate development of rhizogenesis the shoot cuttings were collected every 3-4 days. On the same days samples were collected to determine the quantity of starch changes during rhizogenesis in leaves and steam bases of the cuttings.
Formation of adventitious root initials in treatment 'etiolation' first was found on the 10th day after the shoot cuttings insertion in to substrate. In light treatment 'sun' root initials were observed on the 14th day after cuttings inserted in soil. In both versions formation of root initials correlates with an increase in the amount of starch in the base of the cuttings. In turn, the quantity of starch decrease coincides with the root primordial development.
During experiment better rooting and overwintering showed cuttings with the light treatment 'sun'. Analysis of data showed no correlation between cuttings overwinter survival and amount of starch pages and foundations, so the quantity of starch can not be used as a marker to determine the overwinter survival.
