Iepriekš apgūto valodu lingvistiskās iezīmes mēdz tikt piedēvētas jaunām svešvalodām šādi ietekmējot to apgūšanu un lietošanu.
The linguistic features of previously studied languages tend to be transferred to a target language influencing its learning and production. The purpose of the present study is to determine the most common lexical transfer error type, their source and frequency. It explores lexical transfer errors from students’ mother tongue and English as the first language included in the bachelor study programme of the university in the production of the second foreign language in the programme, namely, the Italian language. The error analysis of student compositions shows that the most common lexical transfer error is coinage. For the majority of lexical transfer errors the source language is the first study language. The level of student proficiency in the target language is interdependent with the frequency of lexical transfer error occurrence lexical transfer being less common among more advanced students.
Key words: first and second foreign language, mother tongue, lexical transfer, error analysis, contrastive analysis, coinage.
