The activities connected with political elections and campaigning have adopted many characteristics of the military and sports, thus, influencing the language used to describe these activities. The goal of the bachelor thesis was to explore the usage of military and sport metaphors in newspaper articles on political elections and to prove the applicability of the semantic field theory to the interpretation of metaphors. The theoretical research methods comprised the study of the theory on metaphor, which displayed different types and functions of metaphors, as well as the process of interpreting metaphors. They also explored the semantic field theory in order to reveal the connection between the semantic field theory and the
concept of metaphor. The discourse analysis of articles on political issues, elections specifically, was conducted in order to identify military and sport metaphors, their frequency and functions. It can be concluded that in order to explain the target domain ‘elections’ in political discourse, the source domains pertaining to the semantic fields of the military and sports are commonly utilized.
Key words: political discourse, political elections, semantic field theory, source and target domains, military and sport metaphors.
