Izpētes rezultāts iepazīstina ar citiem attieksmes vietniekvārdiem, kā piemēram: what, when, where, why. Skaidrojošās gramatikas un laikrakstu izpētes rezultātā iegūtie secinājumi parāda, ka attieksmes vietniekvārds that var tikt izlaists ierobežojošajos (restrictive) attieksmes palīgteikumos, ja tas neveic subjekta funkciju. Ļoti neformālā un nestandarta angļu valodā ir sastopami reti izņēmumi, kuros attieksmes vietniekvārds that var tikt izlaists pildot subjekta funkciju. | en_US |
dc.description.abstract | The topic of the bachelor paper is “That–Relative Clauses in English – Constraints on Usage and Omission of the Relativiser.” The aim of the bachelor paper is to investigate the classification and functions of relative clauses in the English language, to explore the different pronouns typically used and when the omission of the relativiser that is possible and allowed to reach the aim of the paper, traditional grammars are compared with descriptive grammars in order to investigate the different approaches in relative clause building. The Empirical part of the research on usage and omission of the relativiser that has been performed on the Canadian newspapers Leader-Post and The Wall Street Journal, as well as in BBC news articles.
According to descriptive grammars, the main findings of the research reveal that classification of the relative clauses into nominal, adnominal and sentential is the most suitable, because it covers all possible relative constructions. Other relative pronouns such as: what, when, where, why that introduce relative clauses are introduced. By investigating and comparing the descriptive grammar sources and the newspaper language, the conclusion can be drawn that the relativiser that can be omitted in restrictive relative clauses, where it does not function as the subject of the clause. There are exceptions in very informal and nonstandard English where that is omitted as the subject of the clause but these cases are comparably rare. | en_US |
