- The present bachelor paper is aimed at analysing the criteria for defining the category of adjective and to investigate the adjective class in English grammar in order to ascertain whether determinatives are or are not adjectives. The reason for choosing this particular topic for research is based on the author’s personal interests concerning this issue, as well as the intention to conduct more extensive research in future. The present paper consists of three chapters and investigates the place of adjectives in the overall system of word classes, the types of adjectives and determiners in the English language as well as their semantic, morphological and syntactic properties. To explain how adjectives and determinatives function in English theoretical aspects and for empirical data two corpora have been investigated. The methods of investigation comprise analysing and comparing relevant theoretical material. The result of the research demonstrates that the majority of determinatives are not adjectives because they are not identical in meaning and function, and cannot be used interchangeably in English.
Key words: grammatical criteria, part of speech, the adjective class, semantics, morphology, syntax, determiners.
