Tulkošana sociokulturālajā kontekstā

Abstract

Tulkošanu bieži vien uzskata par mehānisku darbību – saprast vārdus pirmvalodā un atrast piemērotu terminu mērķvalodā. Tomēr tulkošana ir divu kultūru saskarsme, tulks ir kā tilts starp tām, un katra saskarsme starp cilvēkiem – vai nu lietojot vārdus vai papīru un zīmuli – ir saziņa starp kultūrām. Viens no tulkošanas galvenajiem mērķiem ir radīt lasītājam saprotamu tekstu. Diemžēl ne vienmēr šis mērķis ir sasniegts. Spilgts piemērs ir pavārgrāmatas tulkotas latviešu valodā pirms 20 un pirms 5 gadiem. Ņemot vērā mazo latviešu valodu, vēsturisko situāciju un tulkotāju nepietiekamās zināšanas latviešu kultūrā, vairākos gadījumos tulkotais teksts nepietiekami pilda savas funkcijas un galvenā doma nesasniedz lasītāju.

Although the translation is often seen as a mechanical process, there is more to it than just decoding the language and finding equivalent term in the target language. Translation is the relationship between two cultures, the translator is a bridge between them, and each linguistic contact with other people whether it is using one’s voice or pen and paper, is contact between cultures. One of the translations’ main purposes is to be understandable to the reader; however, in some cases the aim is not achieved. A vivid example is cookery related texts translated into Latvian both 5 and 20 years ago. Due to the minority of the language, historical situation and translator’s lack of expertise in the target culture, in some cases the bridge of communication is not sufficient.
