Sieviešu gotiskā romāna tradīcijas Šarlotes Pērkinsas Gilmanes stāstā "Dzeltenās tapetes"

Abstract

Šis darbs pēta sieviešu gotisko žanru (Female Gothic) un analizē Šarlotes Pērkinsas Gilmanes (Charlotte Perkins Gilman) stāstu „Dzeltenās tapetes” (“The Yellow Wallpaper”), kas ir sarakstīts šajā žanrā. Tas cenšas pētīt grūtības, ar kādām nācās saskarties patriarhālā pakļautībā esošām sievietēm, galvenokārt fokusējoties uz Viktorijas laikmeta vidusšķiras ģimenēm. Darbs sastāv no teorētiskām un praktiskām nodaļām. Teorētiskā daļa apskata sieviešu gotisko žanru, Viktorijas laika dzimumu ideoloģiju un sieviešu veselības un slimības jautājumus. Praktiskā puse analizē to, kā gotiskā žanra tradīcijas ir tikušas pielietotas, lai atklātu varones un tādējādi arī autora bažas par sievietes stāvokli sabiedrībā. Analīzes rezultātā tika atklāti konflikti starp varones uzspiesto lomu un individuālām vēlmēm un vajadzībām. Darbā tika analizēts tas, kāda ietekme uz varoni un visu ģimeni bija šai lomu sadalei, un kā tas noveda varoni pie sajukšanas prātā. Visbeidzot tika analizēta varones vājprāta dubultā nozīme saistībā ar sievietes lomas maiņu.

The present paper studies the Female Gothic and analyses Charlotte Perkins Gilman's story “The Yellow Wallpaper” written within this genre conventions. It aims at exploring difficulties that women under the patriarchal rule used to face, mostly focusing on the middle-class family of the Victorian epoch. The paper contains both theoretical and practical chapters. The theoretical part examines the conventions of the Female Gothic genre, the Victorian gender ideology and the questions of female health and illness. The practical part analyses how the Gothic genre traditions have been used in order to reveal the heroine's and therefore the authors anxieties concerning the position of the woman in society. As a result of the analysis the conflicts between the imposed role and the individual desires and needs of the heroine have been revealed. It has been analysed what influence on the heroine and the whole family the separation of roles had and how it led the heroine to madness. Finally, the double meaning of the heroine's madness in connection with the change of the female role has been analysed.
