Spriedzes attīstība Ramzija Kempbela stāstu krājumā "Nomoda murgi"

Abstract

Līdz šim spriedze ir bijusi maz pētīta parādība literatūrā, jo tā tiek uzskatīta par nejaušu blakusparādību, kas raksturīga vieglajai literatūrai. Pēdējā desmitgadē Maikls Dž. Tulans (Micheal J. Toolan) un Jumiko Ivata (Yumiko Iwata) ir sākuši šo tēmu analizēt gan no literāra, gan lingvistiska, kā arī psiholoģijas skatupunkta. Ramzijs Kempbels (Ramsey Campbell) tiek uzskatīts par meistarīgu spriedzes un šausmu stāstu autoru. Lai gan viņa daiļrade ir pētīta literārās teorijas ietvaros, trūkst ieskata tieši no lingvistikas aspekta. Šī bakalaura darba mērķis ir izpētīt modalitātes nozīmi spriedzes veidošanā trijos stāstos, kas izvēlēti no Ramzija Kempbela stāstu krājuma “Nomoda murgi” (Waking Nightmares). Suspense has long been a neglected topic in literary studies, mainly because it is considered to be an incidental effect characteristic of low fiction. However, in the last decade scholars such as M.J. Toolan and Yumiko Iwata have begun to investigate the subject from both a literary, linguistic and psychological perspective in greater detail. The renowned horror fiction author Ramsey Campbell is considered a master of suspenseful, fear provoking short stories. While his works have been analyzed from the point of view of literary theory, there is a lack of research that studies them from a linguistic point of view. Thus, the goal of this BA thesis is to analyze the use of modality in creating suspense in three selected horror fiction stories from Campbell’s anthology Waking Nightmares. The methods of research include critical and descriptive analysis. The results reveal that epistemic modality plays a significant role in fulfilling the criteria for the creation of suspense.
