Bailes vēlīnajā Viktorijas laika sabiedrībā: gotika un Britu impērija

Abstract

Bakalaura darbs „ Bailes vēlīnajā Viktorijas laika sabiedrībā: gotika un Britu impērija” pievēršas 19-tā gadsimta britu sabiedrībā bailu atspoguĜojumam Viktorijas laika gotiskajā literatūrā. Lai īstenotu darba mērėi, analizēti vairāki ievērojami vēlīnās Viktorijas laika gotikas piemēri, proti: Brema Stokera „ Drakula”, Roberta Luissa Stīvensona „ Savādais notikums ar doktoru Džekilu un misteru Haidu” un Oskara Vailda „ Doriana Greja ăīmetne”. Pētījums atklāj, ka bailes tiek izmantotas diviem nolūkiem: lai palielinātu stāstījuma ticamību un paustu sociālo kritiku, tādējādi atklājot, ka vēlīnajā 19- tā gadsimtā britu politika, morāle un intelektuālais klimats stipri ietekmēja gotikas žanru. Darbs sastāv no piecām nodaĜām. Pirmā un otrā nodaĜa sniedz ieskatu Viktorijas laika kultūrā un gotikas žanra tematikā, tupretī pārējās trīs nodaĜas veltītas augšminēto literāro darbu analīzei. The present Bachelor paper under the title “Fears in Late Victorian Society: Gothic and the British Empire” deals with the fears of the 19th century British society as they are reflected in Victorian Gothic literature. For this purpose several prominent works of the late Victorian Gothic are analyzed, namely, Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. The research attempts to demonstrate that the motif of fear is used in two respects: as a means to enhance the verisimilitude of the narrative and to express social criticism; such usage proves that in the late 19th century the Gothic literature was strongly influenced by the British political, moral and intellectual climate. The work consists of five chapters. The first and the second give an insight of the Victorian culture and the Gothic genre respectively, and the last three comprise the analysis of the abovementioned literary works.
