The aim of the research Pathos in ancient Greek funeral orations is to clarify the content and lexical aspect of persuasive pathos in the culture of Greek funeral orations. The theoretical background of the research are ancient sources, that are the nearest, concerning the time of composition, to the research object, namely, Aristotle’s Rhetorics’ and the treatise’s Rhetorics to Alexander analysis of epideictic oratory, under which the funeral orations are subordinated, as well as Aristotle’s theory of the pathos. The object of research are the following 5./4.c.BC orations – Pericles’, Lysias’, Demosthenes’ and Hyperides’ funeral orations.
In the funeral orations the objective of pathos is to persuade the audience. Using the textual content Greek orators affected the audience in two ways – using mythical motifs and mentioning real events. The funeral orations show - every motif was used with the aim to infuse the positive emotions towards the athenians, but negative towards the others, accordingly strenghtening their collective self-confidence.
