The present research examines the use of linking adverbials in newspaper and research articles on business. The aim of the research was to analyze the frequency and semantic meanings of linking adverbials in the selected corpus. The literature review deals with the theories by such authors as M. A. K. Halliday, J. Swales, and others. The discourse analysis of linking adverbials is based on the theoretical framework by Biber et al. (1999). The research demonstrates that the category of contrast/concession is the most common semantic type of linking adverbials used in the news register with the function to show contrast, whereas the category of result/inference is the most frequently used one in the academic prose register with the main function to draw conclusions. It can be concluded that although the frequency of the use of linking adverbials differs, they help to fulfill the transactional function of language in newspaper and research articles.
Key words: discourse analysis, news register, academic prose register, linking adverbials, transactional function of language
