Taking into account that the reserve of fossil fuel worldwide is decreasing efficient waste recovery is one of the alternative ways for getting energy and nutrients for farmland fertilization. Within the master theses a model which can be applied for calculations of energy and nutrient output from organic waste using a life cycle assessment based approach has been elaborated. The model can be used to assess such processes of waste recovery as transport, landfilling with or without methane utilization, biogas production, incineration, composting and farmland application, as well as importance of waste sorting. The model has been used to analyze alternative ways for treating the organic waste in Riga city based on 15 different scenarios. Calculations are based on organic waste quantity data from Riga and on data describing waste management and recovery processes collected by scientists Poulsen and Hansen in Denmark from waste treatment facilities and relevant literature sources. Results show evidence that current management of organic waste processing in Riga city is not effective: energy production is low, nutrient recovery is not implemented and emissions of greenhouse gases are not prevented. Elaborated scenarios and calculations give opportunity to think of improvements for organic waste management in Riga.
Keywords: organic waste, waste processing, energy production from waste, emissions of greenhouse gases, nutrients, life cycle analysis.
